Adam Nicolson’s superb and highly recommended book The Seabird’s Cry, concentrates on the lives and habits of 10 particular sea birds. The writing swivels between the forensic and the poetic, and presents research in a way that is not just comprehensible but compelling.

A favourite is the description of the Sooty Albatross.

“When the wind is not with them they can use it to pursue their course, lift them 50-60feet above the sea, then allow gravity to glide them downwards to the direction they need to go. A dynamic soaring that is a constant, rhythmic alteration, the slow metronomic pulse of an ocean voyager’s life…”.

Life in Limbo

Suspending your own breath. What is revealed in the presence of nature. A void and equilibrium that can be wiped out. Being in suspension, but not a standstill. Like a tight rope walker who hesitates, risks the fall. None the less is tempted to appreciate leviation, like waiting a sort of inner retreat. Schweben - Jahresthema St.Polten Austria 2021

Asylum Harbour was the initial name give to Dun Laoghaire harbour in Dublin Bay Ireland when construction began in 1842. A Harbour is what a safe sanctuary represents –a place of security and solidity. The spatial quality is the strongest aspect of the harbour .

From that sanctuary a notional journey, beginning from between the two lighthouses at the mouth of Dun Laoghaire harbour into the unrevealed waters of the Bay. Or as the ancients referred to it as Ultima Thule- the limit of any journey that one can know and conquer ones reality- Dublin Bay.

The harbour is formed by its two huge arms and sheer totality , corrals a great volume of sea water.Harbours have had a number of transformations over time , that have not just changed their physicality, but currently ,their purpose and meaning.

INFINITE WIDENESS

Between Frontiers and Times. The ocean is a vast area that crosses time zones and frontiers. There can be a stillness, but there’s always a danger it’s about to erupt into conflict. Ships represent the endless human quest. Journey’s undertaken on water can disregard the dangers and have destructive consequences.

To find and rescue those in peril on this infinite wideness can seem impossible despite advances in technology in navigation and location.

Doldrums and fathoms

'An té a Mbíonn long aige, geibheann sé cóir uair éigin' (He who has a boat eventually finds a breeze.) Making a passage through the doldrums under sail, the experience which every sailor-man ought to have once in his lifetime, so that he may learn to be patient and appreciate some of the difficulties with which his forefathers had to contend. But once is enough.

The great voyager. The legacy of a few can sometimes be hard to grasp completely. To do justice for all their lifetime of endeavours is an impossible task. And so be it in the case of the late Tim Severin 1940-2020. In Nov 2023 there will be a special gathering of crew (those still with us) from a number of Tim’s expeditions in London, to remember and celebrate his life and accomplishments.

The Church and its Spire (not realised yet)

An exhibition proposal submitted to the Church of St.Peter exhibition space Wiener Neustadt Lower Austria 2013 by Leonard Sheil (Irl) and Norbert Maringer (Aus)

Irish proverbs are full of phrases about the power of silence.Cancerous Irish culture of saying nothing and hiding behind institutions. The scapegoating that has continued has not helped any healing process .The real measure of these crimes may never be known, but only try to be imagined.
